How to Create Your Own Slim Artificial Christmas Tree Topper from Scratch
It’s time to start thinking about Christmas and there are so many things that need to get done. If you’re like me, you’re already planning on buying an artificial Christmas tree this year. I’ve grown up with real trees and the kids love them too but the hassle of cleaning up the mess left behind is not worth it for me anymore.
A few years ago I bought a slim artificial tree because it was easier to store and it can be folded up when not in use. They are usually around 6 feet tall and they look really nice. But since we have a high ceiling in our living room, I wanted something taller so I got a 7-foot slim tree instead. Problem is, most of these trees don’t come with any kind of decorations or lights on top.
You know how much fun it is decorating your house for Christmas? Well making your own slim artificial Christmas tree topper from scratch will allow you to do just that.
This project is a bit more advanced, but the results are worth it. You can make your own slim artificial Christmas tree topper from scratch!
Follow these steps to make your own slim artificial Christmas tree topper:
Choose Your Materials: Choose two pieces of cardboard that are about 8 inches tall and as wide as you want your final product to be. The cardboard should be at least 1/4 inch thick so it’s sturdy enough for the weight it will carry. Cut out the shapes using scissors or an X-Acto knife. You’ll need two identical shapes for each side of your Christmas tree topper.
Paint Your Pieces: Paint one side of each piece with acrylic paint using a sponge brush or foam applicator pad. Be sure not to get any paint on the other side of the cardboard because this will make it hard for the pieces to stick together later on! Let them dry completely before moving on.
Measure the distance between the two branches on your tree. This will help you determine how big to make the star topper.
Draw out your star shape and cut out your cardboard using a box cutter or x-acto knife.
Trace the star onto your felt, then use scissors to cut out a piece that is slightly larger than the outline.
Lay down a sheet of newspaper on a flat surface and spray paint one side of your star with gold spray paint. Let it dry completely before flipping it over and painting the other side with silver spray paint (I recommend letting it sit overnight).
Next, cut out some pieces of wire that are long enough to make it from the top branch of your tree to where you want your star to be positioned
Bend each piece into an “L” shape by bending each end 90 degrees so they cross each other at about a 45 degree angle. You’ll need 4 total pieces for this step, 2 for each side of your star (so make 2 more if needed).
